Spark Your Sense of Wonder

Are there moments in your day that you stop in your tracks in awe of something?

Moments that are wonder-filled, like seeing a rainbow or standing on the beach staring at the immenseness of the ocean, or seeing a baby, or a baby bird or baby turtle. Moments that remind you what it’s all about.

These moments are important. Research shows that each of us needs those moments that make us feel part of something larger than ourselves.

Have you ever considered how you see the world? Does the world around you inspire you?

Feeling that sense of awe makes us feel good, it strengthens our immune system, relieves stress, and encourages us to connect with others.

If you’d like to add more wonder to your world, step out of your comfort zone and seek inspiration.

New Avenues for Inspiration

Appreciate art. Decorate your home with beauty and listen to music. Visit art museums and express your creativity through painting or gardening.

Play with your kids. You may have lost some of your ability to feel that sense of awe and wonder as you grew up. Spending time with younger family and friends can help you recapture your enjoyment of falling snow and mud pies.

Walk your dog. For maximum excitement, consult the nearest dog.
They’ll point out ALL the highlights in your neighborhood park or backyard.

Take a trip. Travel is another proven way to change your perspective and expand your thinking. Research destinations for your next vacation or a weekend outing. Order brochures, browse online, and talk with others about their recommendations.
Go outside. Nature is a major source of inspiration close to home or far away. Watch the sun rise and set. Buy a bird feeder or volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary.

regular daily routines become more meaningful when you engage fully with what you’re doing.

Try “Tweaking” your day to help spark a sense of wonder:

Wake up earlier. Find a bedtime that allows you to wake up naturally with plenty of energy to explore your day.

Work out. Exercise helps you stay active and it changes up your daily routine, allowing opportunities for new experiences.

Savor your food. Honor the experience rather than rushing through it.

Sit outside and immerse yourself in the activities of the birds, squirrels, rabbits. Watch the breeze blow through the leaves of the tree. If you live near the ocean, go to the beach and sit and listen to the waves. Just spend time “being”.

Allow wonder and awe to become part of your daily life. Slow down and discover the wonders that surround you.

Help others. Practice random acts of kindness.

Focus on teamwork. Celebrate diversity and build trust.

Try new things. Novelty promotes feelings of awe and helps you to stay engaged. Go to a party or a meetup and chat with strangers. Take courses online. Ride your bike instead of driving.

Keep a journal. It’s easy for your sense of wonder to get lost amid the daily “stuff”.  A journal could help you to notice and remember the amazing moments that happen each day.
